The Celica T-Sport, introduced in August 2000 was the 7th generation of Celica to date. The all alloy 2ZZ-GE engine is shared with the Corolla T Sport and Lotus Elise along with the 6 speed manual transmission.
VVTLi stands for variable valve timing and lift, the switching point for the "lift" is at 6,200rpm. At this point the engine comes alive and can rev cleanly to it's 8,200rpm limiter. Below the lift point the engine is very economical and still produces good torque.
The model was face-lifted in 2003, with changes to the front bumper and rear lights the most obvious.
Toyota GB launched the GT model in June 05; this is essentially a T-Sport with different body kit, spoiler and alloys.
Japanese import models were known as SS1 and SS11 Superstrut Package. They were also available with a tiptronic/auto gearbox.
There is also a ltd edition run of 1200, TRD M Sport versions, which were hand built in Japan, the engines featured 200bhp, forged pistons, uprated exhaust manifold and system, as well as LSD, suspension upgrades, different body kit and interior, reduced soundproofing and strengthened body shell. These very special models were based on the SS11 Super Strut Package and are in great demand.
